2026 Yosemite National Park Trek
This summer, the Ross Lynn Foundation partnered with Shreveport’s Community Renewal to send a select group of youths in the community and chaperones for an unforgettable adventure to Yosemite National Park in California. From July 25th-30th, these students- Kameron, Amaury, and Eric -experienced a trip full of firsts. First time traveling west, first time on an airplane, first time hiking in the mountains, and so much more.
Before heading to Yosemite, the group of 13 to 14 year old youths prepared for their adventure by practicing how to pack their bags and tents, breaking in their hiking boots on local trails, and learning the do’s and don’ts of being in the wilderness. They also spent time talking about their individual abilities, knowing their limits, and what it means to be a collaborator and leader in the future.
One of the most memorable parts of the trip was stepping away from technology and spending time fully immersed in nature. With no cell service to distract them, the students were able to experience the beauty and quiet of the outdoors - including looking forward to nighttime when they could see the stars without the interference of light pollution.
The group was accompanied by two chaperones: DeCedric Bowman and Eric Dewayne Robertson. One volunteer, Jimmy Ray (JR), a former One Great River volunteer. And Trevor Husted, who is a hiking guide from Alpine Glow, who made sure the expedition was a success. This trek was more than visiting a beautiful national park. This journey gave each youth the chance to challenge themselves, discover new strengths, and experience the outdoors in a whole new way.
